The Sherlock Series
The work started as a desire to be 'in' those old films after slow recovery from a brain injury. I appropriated images of Film Noire scenes as 'film stills' by snapping pix with my iPad of Basil Rathbone portraying Sherlock Holmes with myself in the foreground, dressed in a hat, trench coat and red lipstick. I painted self portraits as characters along side the Great Sherlock Holmes actor Basil Rathbone: Watson, Irene Adler, Inspector Lestrade, various clients.
I was inspired by Cindy Sherman's intimate examination of the stereotypes of women and found this to be a viable exploration as an "investigation."
Paintings are created on tar paper in oil pastel, oil paint and oil printing ink. The tar paper adds a lively surface texture and offers a dialogue of golden hues.
All works on tar paper with oil pastel, oil stick, oil paint and have a 2" double mat. Most are 14" x 17" original size.
